We took a little break from Europe posts in order to update our design. But we are back to Europe! We left off in beautiful Italy and now we just have the last leg of our trip: France and Spain. I was SO excited to take Landon to France! I couldn't wait to speak French everywhere and woo him with my ooo la las. I was also pretty excited because a lot of who I am is the cultural norm in France/Europe (whereas it is not so common in America) and I was really looking forward to Landon understanding why I feel so at home in Europe. Things like how I don't like milk chocolate, or american chocolate, how I speak quietly in public, love riding bikes, would rather have a fiat than a truck and other random things.
We spent the first day going from Italy to France entirely on trains. We went to 4 train stations, missed one train and waited two hours for the next one, watched two harry potter movies, played lots of ticket to ride and caught up on sleep. We were really sad to leave behind gelato, but so excited to see France. Our final destination was Marseille where we picked up a little fiat and drove to a campground next to the sea. Everyone was so kind and accommodating! Landon couldn't believe that the French were so nice because of the reputation they have in the states. I couldn't have been happier!
Our first day driving in France we happened to cross this amazing bridge in the south of France! We were just driving along and all of a sudden we came around a bend and before us was this massive bridge! WOW!! It is called the Millau Viaduct and it happens to be the tallest bridge in the world! at 1125ft. We were so excited that we happened to drive across the tallest bridge in the world!
After we crossed the bridge we had a miracle experience. Only about a mile from the bridge we realized we needed gas so we stopped in Millau to look for a gas station. We went to several and surprisingly found none with gas attendants. The reason we needed a gas attendant was that our American credit card did not have a EMV chip which has replaced the swipe mechanism in Europe. So with no gas attendant, we figured we would have to camp in our car at the gas station until morning. Fortunately, an hour or so later, a sweet couple came to get gas and offered to pay for our gas with their card in exchange for cash! They were so kind!! And we got to go off to our next destination!
While we waited we watched this incredible group of gliders off a Millau hillside. We have never before seen so many at one time!
Later that day we arrived to the town of Roussillon. It is a village set up on ocre cliffs. The village buildings are all made from this clay rock and so they are the most brilliant reds, oranges and yellows.
We took a walk along Sentier des Ocres to see more of the ocre and were blown away.
